What’s In Low Sodium Mustard?
I get all the fresh produce for my recipes from my garden and from Misfits Market – they sell all organic produce at a super discounted price, and it’s purchased direct from the farmers. We get Misfit Market boxes every month and love picking out our favorite seasonal produce for delivery. You can get $10 off your first $30 box by clicking here!
If you think organic produce is too expensive… think again, and give Misfits Market a look!
- Mustard Seeds: which give this dish fantastic texture & flavor. I always keep mustard seeds in my pantry to add to brines and homemade pickles.
- Mustard Powder: I love adding this mustard powder to this condiment/sauce – it adds a nice sharpness and bright yellow color.
- Apple Cider Vinegar, which gives this mustard a little extra tang which is really fantastic! I love using this organic apple cider vinegar with the mother which has a great flavor. I think it gives a nice extra sweetness and depth.
- Raw Honey: I’d recommend trying a local farmers market to find the best raw honey in your area. If you can’t find local, this raw organic honey online here is the next best thing.
- Turmeric – a staple in our spice cabinet! Aside from all the wonderful health benefits of turmeric (hello anti-inflammation!), the flavor is fantastic. I try to add a teaspoon of turmeric into soups, stews, and rice dishes too.

How Do I Make Mustard Without Salt?
- Using a mortar and pestle, or a spice grinder, ground the mustard seeds to your desired texture. If you like a chunkier mustard like mine, leave some whole seeds in there. If you like a finer mustard, then grind them all the way.
- To a bowl or a mason jar, add the mustard seeds, mustard powder and water, and allow mustard sit for up to 12 minutes. For a spicy mustard, let the mustard sit in the water for 8 minutes. For a more milk mustard, let the mustard soak for 12 minutes.
- Add the vinegar, honey and turmeric, and stir well to combine.
- Refrigerate, and allow mustard to sit for up to 24-48 hours before consuming. It will be spicy at first, but will the flavors will mellow as it sits.

Who knew I could make my own and is so good
Very tasty! How long does this last in the refrigerator without preservatives?
Thank you David! Our lasts up to 1 month in the refrigerator in an airtight container (I use a mason jar with a secured lid + band).
Love the idea of this recipe. I am also diabetic. Does it require honey? Hoping I can use another sugar free sweetener.
Hi Linda – you can absolutely use a sugar-free substitute instead of honey. Please let me know how it turns out!
Do you have to use turmeric or is there a substitute?
Hello R, no you don’t have to use it – I added it for a extra yellow color, but it’s optional.
