Jump to RecipeThis low sodium orange glazed chicken is a sweet and savory dinner recipe, baked in the oven, and ready in about 30 minutes! Tender, juicy, and SO flavorful without any added salt.
One of our favorite go-to low sodium dinner ideas, this easy baked chicken is coated with plenty of spices and a flavorful orange glaze. Serve with low sodium rice pilaf, steamed vegetables, and a low sodium chopped salad for a complete meal!
No more boring chicken dinners, this bright and fresh orange-glazed chicken is here to bring major flavor to the table! I created this recipe after having a similar chicken dish at a Caribbean restaurant, and had to make a low sodium version at home!
Place sliced oranges at the bottom of a baking dish, add the chicken breasts, and top with spices and orange marmalade. The sugars in the marmalade form a delicious crust when baked, and there is amazing orange flavor in each bite.
Hubby and I both gave this a 10/10, and it was even better than the version I had at the restaurant!

Ingredients You’ll Need
See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!
- Low Sodium Chicken – getting good meat without added preservatives is key for reducing the sodium in your chicken. Store-bought meats can contain “hidden sodium” from being injected with a salt solution. Look for all natural chicken, and always purchase chicken with a nutrition label on it.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Chili Powder
- Smoked Paprika – I like using smoked paprika which has a great smoky taste, it elevates this chicken!
- Orange Marmalade – I’ve never been much of a marmalade fan… until I tried it on my meats! It makes a really great coating for chicken, pork, or low sodium shrimp if you can find some. The marmalade I found at my store was 0mg sodium, making it a great choice to add to dinner or your breakfast table.
- Fresh oranges – I baked the chicken on top of sliced oranges, plus they look really nice as a garnish.
- Black Pepper
- Fresh herbs, for garnish, parsley or cilantro
Tips for Buying Low Sodium Chicken
I love finding new (& delicious!) ways to cook chicken. Chicken is an inexpensive protein, is great for easy lunches and dinners, and is so versatile – you can cook it many different ways! When buying chicken, make sure to find a low salt or sodium variety, as some chicken brands add a salt solution to texture the meat.
I recommend buying chicken that has a nutrition label on it, so you know the exact amount of sodium in the meat. Or check out your local butcher and ask them for low sodium options. And skip the rotisserie or pre-cooked chicken in the deli section – it can have added salt and sodium.
How To Make This Recipe
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Thinly slice the oranges, with the skin on.
- In a large 13 x 9 inch baking dish, add half of the orange slices in an even layer to the bottom of the dish. Place chicken breasts on top of the oranges in an even layer. Top each chicken breast with a drizzle of olive oil.
- In a small bowl, add the black pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, and paprika. Mix to combine. Pour 1 teaspoon of the mixture over each breast.
- Over the spice mixture, spread 1 teaspoon of orange marmalade over each chicken breast. Use the back of a spoon to smooth the marmalade evenly over the surface of the chicken.
- Place the chicken in the pre-heated oven, and bake for 25-35 minutes (the thicker the chicken, the longer it will take), until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit, which is cooked through.
- Once chicken is done, place on a serving plate and garnish with the remaining half of the orange slices. Serve hot and enjoy. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

What do you typically serve this with?
Hi Nicole! I like to serve this with stir fried vegetables and steamed white rice – if you chop the chicken after you cook it, it’s great with mixed veggies.
