Eating low sodium doesn’t mean you can’t splurge on favorites!  This low so steak recipe is a great example of how you can enjoy great meals without salt. Having a great spice rub is key to a low sodium steak.

Every few months we get a huge beef tenderloin from our local butcher and cut it into perfect steaks. We freeze some for later, but always throw the best cuts on the grill for dinner that day. We season our steak with a fantastic spice blend that has no salt or sodium.  There is so much flavor in this recipe, you won’t miss the salt.

Make these at your next cookout, or feel free to bring them to a host’s cookout too ! Most people will be more than happy to grill something you brought and accommodate your dietary needs.

Ingredients

  • Steak – we love a good tenderloin cut, but you can use your favorite: T bone, porterhouse, filet mignon.
  • Spice Rub – we love using a no salt Montreal Steak Spice, which is our absolute favorite!  It has so much flavor, and no salt. This Steak Spice is a blend of garlic, pepper, oregano, crushed pepper flakes, and a little dill for an amazing flavor.  Great for potatoes, meat, vegetables, pretty much anything!

Other Spice Options

If you want something different for your steak and can’t find no-salt steak spice, here are more great options:

  • Salt-Free Lemon Pepper Seasoning – salt free lemon pepper seasoning is one of our favorite low sodium spices! It brings a ton of flavor from real lemon and pepper corns, and is SO good in this recipe.
  • Onion Powder: adds a delicious and savory flavor to this dish as well.
  • Garlic Powder: Also a major pantry staple ingredient that gets used in our house daily! I love this garlic powder and add it to a lot of recipes that I would use fresh garlic in too.
  • Red Chili Flakes: for a little heat! I like to add a few shakes to this recipe to give this dish a nice complex depth of flavor.
  • SaltFree Adobo Seasoning: a really fantastic blend of turmeric, pepper, garlic, and spice! I like to get one that doesn’t have added salt it in, so I can control the amount of sodium going into the dish.

How To Make This Recipe

  1. Season the steak: in a separate bowl, add your spices and mix with a spoon. We love a salt free steak spice, but also add garlic or onion powder too.
  2. Once mixed, add half the steak spice to one side of your steak. Flip, and rub the other side with the remainder of the spice.
  3. If grilling or using the oven, heat the steak on a 400 degree oven or grill until the steak reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit. This can very based on cooking method, however I found it usually takes 15-25 minutes.
  4. Once the steak is cooked, remove from heat. Add 1 teaspoon unsalted butter on top of each steak, and allow to sit for 5 minutes before enjoying.
