If you’re looking for a fantastic low sodium side dish for pasta night, this garlic bread brings serious flavor without salt! It’s a favorite in our house, I always make a tray when we’re having Italian food.

The secret to making really good low sodium garlic bread is starting with a low sodium bread – I usually use my low salt no-knead bread (just 4 ingredients, and rises overnight!) or my low sodium whole wheat bread.  You can use a store-bought bread as well, just make sure it fits in with your dietary needs.

What’s In This Low Salt Garlic Bread Recipe?

See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!

  • Low Sodium Bread – I start with my low salt no-knead bread or my low sodium wheat bread as a base, it’s lower in salt than most store-bought breads, and toasts up very nicely for this recipe! You can use a store-bought bread, just be sure the sodium content fits in with your dietary needs.
  • Garlic – I love using fresh garlic, not jarred, which has an amazing flavor.
  • Garlic Powder: Also a major pantry staple ingredient that gets used in our house daily! I love this garlic powder and add it to a lot of recipes that I use fresh garlic in too.
  • Unsalted Butter  – we only use unsalted butter in all our recipes, it’s a great way to cut down on your salt & sodium intake with a simple swap.
  • Red Chili Flakes: for a little heat! I like to add a few shakes to this recipe to give this dish a nice spiciness.
  • Paprika – for a hint of spice and great flavor!
  • Parsley – which brightens up the garlic bread with a fresh herby flavor.

I use both fresh garlic and garlic powder in this to give it an extra punch of garlic flavor.  I also like a bit of spice in this too – red pepper flakes and paprika offset kick this garlic bread up a notch.

How To Make This Recipe

  1. Turn on oven broiler, and set to low.
  2. Cut your low sodium bread into desired serving portions: I like thicker slices for a traditional round loaf – or I’ll cut a slice of sandwich bread diagonally into triangles.
  3. In a small dish or jar, add the olive oil, chopped fresh garlic, and garlic powder and mix well to combine.
  4. Using a basting brush, cover the face up bread with the olive oil/garlic mixture.  Ensure that every nook and cranny of the bread has garlic.
  5. Place under the broiler for 3-4 minutes, and check.  Each oven’s broiler is different, so be very careful not to burn your garlic bread.  Make sure it is crisp and beginning to brown at the edges, not harden and blacken.
  6. Remove garlic bread from oven, and sprinkle the top with crushed red pepper flakes, paprika, and parsley. Serve hot, and enjoy!
