Ingredients
See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!
- Lean Ground Meat – for this recipe you can use lean ground beef or lean ground turkey meat. I’ve made this recipe with both, and they taste fantastic!
- Diced Tomatoes: I only use no salt added diced tomatoes, they are really great to stock up on!
- Tomato Paste: thickens the sauce with a deep bold tomato flavor. I only use a no salt added tomato paste, so you can control the amount of salt in the dish.
- Onion
- Olive Oil
- Fresh Garlic
- Balsamic Vinegar
- Italian Seasoning Blend: usually has thyme, basil, rosemary, parsley, etc. I love this bright and flavorful Italian season mix which brings this dish to life.
- Fresh Basil
Optional Add-Ins
I sometimes add in mushrooms or fresh spinach to the sauce to pack some extra veggies in there.
Or for a little extra kick, adding a little white wine is great option.
If you like your sauce spicy, add in 1/2 teaspoon of chili pepper flakes for extra heat!
How To Make This Recipe
- To a Dutch oven or other heavy pot, add the ground beef and cook over medium heat for 10 to 12 minutes until the meat browns completely, and there is no pink left. Drain the meat, and set aside.
- To the Dutch oven (no need to wash after cooking the meat), add the olive oil and begin by sautéing the garlic and onion over low heat. 5 to 6 minutes, until they begin to soften.
- Add the meat back to the pot, along with the cans of tomatoes with the juice, the tomato paste, the balsamic vinegar, the vegetable stock, the Italian seasoning, and the basil. Stir until all ingredients are mixed and simmer in low heat for 45 minutes until the sauce becomes thick and rich!
- Taste, and add more seasoning or garlic if desired. Serve the meat sauce hot with fresh pasta or use as a dipping sauce for salt-free garlic bread!
