Living in New England, we get amazing fresh seafood from our local butcher and cut it into perfect steaks. We freeze some for later, but always throw the best cuts on the grill for dinner that day. We season our salmon with a fantastic spice blend that has no salt or sodium. There is so much flavor in this recipe, you won’t miss the salt.

What’s In This Low Sodium Salmon Recipe
- Salmon– we love a good salmon steak, but you can use a filet as well.
- Low Sodium Mustard – my easy mustard recipe is sodium & salt free, which makes it the perfect addition to this recipe. If you want a store-bought version, I like this lower sodium mustard which is great to add to this recipe.
- Spice Rub – we love using a no salt Montreal Steak Spice, which is our absolute favorite! It has so much flavor, and no salt. This Steak Spice is a blend of garlic, pepper, oregano, crushed pepper flakes, and a little dill for an amazing flavor. Great for potatoes, meat, vegetables, pretty much anything!
- Other favorite spices to use. If we want something different for our steak, we love using:
- Salt-Free Lemon Pepper Seasoning – this salt free lemon pepper seasoning is one of our favorite low sodium spices! It brings a ton of flavor from real lemon and pepper corns, and is SO good in this recipe.
- Onion Powder: adds a delicious and savory flavor to this dish as well.
- Garlic Powder: Also a major pantry staple ingredient that gets used in our house daily! I love this garlic powder and add it to a lot of recipes that I would use fresh garlic in too.
- Red Chili Flakes: for a little heat! I like to add a few shakes to this recipe to give this dish a nice complex depth of flavor.
- Adobo Seasoning: a really fantastic blend of turmeric, pepper, garlic, and spice! I like to get one that doesn’t have added salt it in, so I can control the amount of sodium going into the dish.
How Do I Make Salmon Without Salt?
- Season the salmon: in a separate bowl, add your mustard and spices and mix with a spoon. We love a salt free steak spice, but also add garlic or onion powder too.
- Once mixed, add half the steak spice to the top side of your salmon.
- If grilling or using the oven, heat the salmon on a 400 degree oven or grill until the salmon reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit. This can very based on cooking method, however I found it usually takes 15-25 minutes.
- Once the salmon is cooked, remove from heat.
