We’ve been enjoying low sodium quesadillas on repeat lately, and nothing jazzes them up like our favorite salt-free guacamole. I love grabbing super fresh and ripe avocados from the store, and making a quick guacamole in about 15 minutes.
This guac goes great with chips, on tacos or burritos, as a dip, or even by itself with a spoon! I’ve used both lemon and lime juice in this recipe, and both are actually great, but I prefer lime – just make sure it’s fresh!
Why This Recipe Works
- It’s bright, fresh, and flavorful.
- This guac has a creamy texture from the avocados, and a nice crunch from the onions and herbs.
- It makes a great low sodium / salt-free appetizer for guests.
- Anyone can successfully make this recipe – just follow our step-by-step photos and directions below.
Ingredients You’ll Need

Fresh, ripe, avocados are the star of this dish! I love waiting until they are perfectly ripe, with a buttery creamy texture that is easy to mash with a fork.
Fresh garlic and red onion add a wonderful flavor to this salt-free guac. I like to finely chop both of them up, and mix them right in.
Fresh lime juice is a must in this recipe! Since there are only a few, simple ingredients in this recipe, the fresh just makes all the difference. Avoid bottled if possible.
I like adding some jalapeno peppers for a little kick. You can remove the seeds for a milder flavor.
Juicy ripe tomatoes are a great addition to this guac. I also like adding fresh cilantro (just a tablespoon or two) for more added freshness.
See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!
Additions and Substitutions
If you don’t like cilantro, you can leave it out or substitute it with fresh parsley (which I have done, and it tastes great)!
If you don’t have fresh lime juice, fresh lemon juice also works well. Just try to use fresh citrus, bottled doesn’t have the same great flavor.
Instead of jalapeno peppers you can still make this guac spicy by using red chili pepper flakes, if desired. For a milder version, omit the jalapeno peppers altogether.
How Do I Make This Salt Free Guacamole?

Step 1: Halve the avocados, carefully remove the pits, and discard them. Scoop the creamy middle flesh out with a spoon into a mixing bowl.

Step 2: With a fork, mash the avocado.

Step 3: Chop your vegetables: garlic, red onion, jalapeno peppers (if using), cilantro, and tomatoes.

Step 4: Add the chopped vegetables to the bowl with the avocado.

Step 5: Add fresh lime juice, and mix well to combine.

Step 6: Enjoy immediately, or refrigerate (covered) for a few hours before serving.
Recipe FAQs
This salt-free guacamole has just 9 mg sodium per serving, as it uses all natural ingredients and no added salt. Restaurant or store-bought guac may have more sodium due to added salt or preservatives, so be sure to check labels before enjoying.
You can make this low sodium guac up to 1 day ahead of time. Make sure to cover the guac with plastic wrap, and press the wrap down right against the guacamole to prevent air from oxidizing the avocados, turning them brown.
It’s between mild and medium, as it does use seeded jalapeno peppers in the guac. For a spicier version, you can keep the seeds in. For a milder version, you can omit the jalapeno or add bell peppers instead.
