It has a minimal amount of sodium, just what is naturally in the spice blend. It’s fantastic on boneless skinless chicken breasts, thighs, or even coated on a whole chicken.

Ingredients For this No Salt Added Chicken Seasoning Recipe

See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!

This simple spice blend uses lots of pantry-staple spices, many of which you may have already on hand! With most ingredients, make sure to check the ingredient list and nutritional information on your favorite spices, as they can sometimes contain added salt. Choose no-salt-added spices to limit sodium intake.

Garlic Powder

Gives this chicken a great savory garlicky flavor! Garlic powder is one of our most-used spices, and is great as the main ingredient base of this spice blend. You can also use garlic granules too.

Onion Powder

For an extra savory flavor. I like adding onion powder to my chicken dishes, which gives it a little extra kick. A little bit goes a long way.

Brown Sugar

I like adding a little sweetness into this spice mix, and brown sugar is a great way to give it a little extra flavor!  Brown sugar is regular sugar and molasses, which adds a nice depth of flavor to this blend.

Thyme

I used dried thyme for this recipe. If you don’t have thyme, you can add in oregano, parsley, marjoram, or any fresh herbs that have been dried. Fresh and dried herbs can bring wonderful natural flavors to any protein you cook.

Smoked Paprika

I love the rich, sweet, smoky flavor of this spice! I like to buy a big container of smoked paprika online, but you may be able to find it at your local grocery store. You can also use regular paprika too, but I like the smoked version for an extra kick and I think it has the best flavor.

Chili Powder

Gives this spice blend tons of flavor from dried ground peppers and chili spices. I have seen chili powder with added salt in the ingredients, so be sure you use one without any salt content., or one that has the lowest sodium overall.

Cayenne Pepper

For heat! If you don’t like spice, you can skip this, but I like adding it to this dry rub mix.

Black Pepper

We use freshly ground black peppercorns for this recipe, but you could use pre-ground pepper or even white pepper if desired. We use pepper daily, so getting good quality peppercorns makes a big difference to our cooking.

Storing & Using this Spice Blend

I like to double the recipe below, and save the leftovers in a glass jar or other airtight container. Store in a cool, dark place (like a spice cabinet!) for up to 3 months.

This low sodium spice blend makes a great all-purpose chicken seasoning. You can coat your low sodium chicken breasts with it, cook them, and use them in Mexican recipes, Indian recipes, or even Italian recipes for added spice!
