Ingredients in Low Sodium Ranch Salad Dressing
- Sour Cream – I used sour cream as the base for this salad dressing. You can also use a plain Greek yogurt instead.
- Milk – you can use any milk you prefer: whole milk, 2%, or fat free. Or even a plain unsweetened plant-based milk like almond milk works. Just be cautious about buttermilk, which can be high in sodium (see below). I don’t recommend using buttermilk for this dressing.
- Garlic – I made this with both fresh garlic and garlic powder, and I have to say the fresh garlic had way more flavor… so I recommend using it if you have fresh garlic cloves on hand.
- Fresh Chives – for a great onion-y flavor
- Onion Powder or onion flakes
- Fresh parsley
- Fresh ground black pepper – fresh peppercorns are the key for a tangy and flavorful ranch dressing.
- Apple cider vinegar
- Mustard Powder
- Low Sodium Worcestershire Sauce: for that unbelievably tangy umami flavor that bring the classic taste to these burgers! I love using this low sodium Worcestershire sauce in all kinds of recipes, at only 45 mg of sodium per serving, a little goes a long way on flavor.
A Note on Sodium Content in Buttermilk
While buttermilk is used as the base of ranch dressing in classic recipes, I omit it in my version. Buttermilk and buttermilk powder can be high in sodium content, so I choose to skip it altogether in my dressing.
Individual buttermilk brands may vary, but ones I have seen are ~350mg sodium per serving, which is higher than I like in my recipes.
Instead I add apple cider vinegar, which gives my homemade recipes a tangy flavor, and is similar to making your own buttermilk.
How To Make Ranch Without Salt
- In a medium bowl, add the sour cream, milk, apple cider, chives, parsley, low sodium Worcestershire sauce, fresh garlic, onion powder, mustard powder, and black pepper.
- Mix well until ingredients are well combined into a cream dressing. Taste, and adjust seasoning as needed – adding extra black pepper or vinegar as desired.
- Use as a dip, toss with a salad, or use it as a dipping sauce. Store leftover ranch in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
Recipe Tips
Add more milk or apple cider vinegar for a thinner dressing.
For a thicker dip to serve with fresh vegetables, you can omit the milk altogether, if desired.
If you can’t find low sodium Worcestershire sauce in grocery stores, you can look for it online.
