Ingredients You’ll Need

The base of this recipe is unsalted nuts. I used unsalted cashews, almonds, pecans, and shelled pumpkin seeds (also called pepitas). I like the color and variety of these nuts, and they all have slightly different textures and flavors which I find pair nicely.

I also add dried cranberries which are a nice treat! I love the color as well as the sweet and tart flavor. I get cranberries that have 50% less sugar which I prefer the flavor of in this mix… but you can use fully sweetened or even unsweetened.

And finally, I add white chocolate into the mix! I had some white chocolate chunks (leftover from my white chocolate macadamia nut cookies) that I add it to give the trail mix a nice sweetness.

Additions and Substitutions

You can add in your other favorite nuts, just be sure they are unsalted. You can add in peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios, macadamia nuts – or any other kind you like! Or add in some sunflower seeds.

You can add raisins or other dried fruit as well.

I like the flavor combination of the cranberries and white chocolate, but you can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips too! Or use a combination of a few types for a fun flavor.

The trail mix can last up to 1 month at room temperature. You’ll want to store it in a cool, dry place so the chocolate doesn’t melt.

You can also make this low sodium trail mix with unsalted peanuts, pistachios, walnuts, Brasil nuts, or hazelnuts – add any nut or seed that you prefer!

Expert Tips

  • If some of the nuts are too large, you can give them a rough chop before adding them to the bowl.
  • Feel free to mix or swap in your favorite nuts or dried fruit!
  • I like to portion this into individual servings so I can grab a small jar or bag for lunches or on-the-go snacking!
