Low Sodium French Toast Recipe

This recipe was featured a few months ago for those on our Double Scoop newsletter, who got this recipe back in March. We got such rave reviews on it, that I had to share it out for everyone here, this is one tasty breakfast!
This recipe starts with your favorite low sodium bread (see our options in the Ingredients section below) dipped in a sweet egg mixture and fried up with unsalted butter. You can serve this with classic pwdered sugar and maple syrup, or with fresh fruit for a lighter option.

This recipe starts with your favorite low sodium bread. I used my favorite low sodium cinnamon raisin bread (an easy low-knead recipe that bakes in a Dutch oven), but you can try this with different bread options. You can use homemade bread like our low sodium white bread, low sodium wheat bread, or low sodium brioche. Or you can use your favorite low sodium store-bought bread: low sodium Hawaiian bread is a favorite of ours, and a few brands make unsalted bread too.
Dip the bread in a mixture made with eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg for a sweet and complex flavor.
Finally you pan-fry the toast in some unsalted butter, sprinkle some powdered sugar on top (optional), and drizzle on pure maple syrup.
Additions and Substitutions
For a lower sugar version, you can skip the powdered sugar and use a sugar-free syrup if needed.
Serve with fruit! Some fresh raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries would be great additions to this French toast.
Or serve this with some savory brunch side dishes for a larger meal: like low sodium sausage patties, low sodium scrambled eggs, or low sodium fruit salad.
Step-By-Step Photos & Directions
Step 1: Start by slicing your low sodium bread (if it’s still in a loaf) to your desired thickness.
Step 2: In a large shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Step 3: In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter and get the pan hot.
Step 4: Once pan is hot, soak the bread slices in the egg mixture for 15-30 seconds so they absorb some of the egg mixture.
Step 5: Place the bread slices in an even layer in the buttered pan (you will need to do this in a few batches).
Step 6: Cook for 4-5 minutes until the French toast is lightly browned on one side, then flip and cook the other side for an additional 3-4 minutes until browned. Repeat until all the bread is cooked. If you have a few batches to do, you can keep the cooked French toast slices warm in a 225 degrees Fahrenheit oven while the rest of the slices cook.
Step 7: Before serving, dust the French toast slices with a bit of powdered sugar.
Step 8: Serve hot, drizzling with more maple syrup and more unsalted butter if desired.
Recipe FAQs
Our low sodium French toast recipe has between 50-400 mg sodium per serving, depending on which bread you use, see our note below in the recipe card. If you order French toast at a restaurant, it may have more sodium as the sodium content of bread can vary.
If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. The French toast is especially good reheated for a few minutes in the air fryer, or you can use the oven or a microwave.
This French toast is best served fresh. You could freeze cooked French toast, but it will get soggy as it thaws, so it’s best to enjoy it within a few days of making it.
Expert Tip
- Keep your oven heated to 225 degrees Fahreneit, and place the toasted slices in there to keep warm while the others cook!

- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- Maple syrup for serving
- Unsalted butter for serving
Instructions
