This low sodium sweet onion vinaigrette recipe is a bright and flavorful salad dressing, made with sweet Vidalia onions and no added salt! This tasty creamy dressing is ready in 5 minutes, with a handful of pantry ingredients, onion, and garlic.

Making your own salad dressings couldn’t be easier – and they taste better than store bought! I love tossing this salad dressing with a chopped kale or fresh spinach salad, loaded with low sodium croutons and nuts.

I love keeping some great salt-free dressing recipes in my rotation, and this sweet onion vinaigrette is creamy, tasty, and SO simple to make! Just add all ingredients to a blender, give it a whirr, and dress your favorite greens.

Sweet onion dressings are great on salads, sandwiches, and tasty as a marinade for chicken. You could even drizzle it over roasted vegetables, or use it as a dipping sauce for fries. This dressing is thick and creamy (and contains no dairy) tastes better than store bought dressing – plus it’s better for you with no added salt or preservatives.

Ingredients You’ll Need

See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!

  • Sweet Onion – I used Vidalia onions, which are large sweet yellow onions. Mellow and sweet. Try and use a sweet or yellow onion if you can, red onions may be too spicy and white onions too sharp.
  • Fresh Garlic – which adds great flavor to this dressing.
  • Honey – I added a little bit of honey for more sweetness in this dressing. You can substitute your favorite natural sweetener (like maple syrup or agave nectar) if desired. If using sugar, brown sugar will give you a bit more flavor than white.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar, gives this sauce a little extra tang which is really fantastic! I love using this organic apple cider vinegar with the mother which has a great flavor, extra sweetness, and depth.
  • Whole Grain Mustard – for a really nice flavor and texture. Using a good mustard makes all the difference, and I like the texture of whole grain mustard in this dressing.  The mustard contains the most added sodium in this recipe (100mg for 1 teaspoon). If you can find a lower sodium mustard or Dijon, you can substitute it if you need to.
  • Black Pepper
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
