These crispy low sodium French fried onions are the perfect recipe to top your holiday green bean casserole! They are simple to make, taste fantastic, and have no added salt!

While these are traditional toppers for low sodium green bean casserole, there are so many ways you can enjoy these easy fried onions. Add them on top of a low sodium burger, add them to soups or on top of a salad with low sodium Caesar dressing to enjoy like croutons.

If you are looking for a great low salt crispy French fried onions, this recipe is a simple and easy way to make your own at home. Crispy fried onions make the best casserole toppers, are fantastic stacked on top of burgers, and make a great crouton substitute for salads and soups.

I start by soaking onions in an egg and milk mixture, coat them in spiced flour and breadcrumbs, then fry up to golden brown perfection! These are a great alternative to buying store-bought fried onions, which can have added salt and preservatives.

I first made these onions to top our low sodium green bean casserole, but they were so tasty, we make and eat them plain now!

A Homemade Alternative to Store-Bought Fried Onions

These crispy onion strings are a great alternative to commercial fried onions in a package. They are simple to make at home, and use only a few pantry and fridge staple ingredients.

if you are looking for an alternative, the recipe below has only 43mg of sodium, and tastes absolutely amazing. It’s like like getting a little onion ring flavor in each bite!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Onions – I used sweet Vidalia onions which gave these an amazing flavor.
  • Eggs – Eggs naturally contain about 60-70mg of sodium per large egg. We try to get cage free / free range eggs when we can. There isn’t any nutritional difference, but I always try to support animal welfare when I can!
  • Milk – you can use any variety, but I recommend using whole milk for extra flavor.
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Low sodium panko breadcrumbs – I found these recently at my Whole Foods and I am obsessed! It can be so hard to find low sodium breadcrumbs that aren’t seasoned, and for 40mg of sodium per half cup, these breadcrumbs are a great low so option!
  • Black Pepper
  • Vegetable oil – or other high oleic frying oil like sunflower oil.

How To Make This Recipe

  1. Thinly slice the onions, and set aside. Heat the oil in skillet.
  2. In a medium bowl, add the egg and the milk. Whisk until frothy and well-combined. Add the sliced onions and soak them for 10 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, the low sodium breadcrumbs, and the black pepper.
  4. Take the sliced onions that have been soaking in the egg mixture, and dredge them through the flour until lightly coated.
  5. Place the coated onion slices in the oil, and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. Add crispy fried onions to green bean casseroles, on burgers, or soups and salads. Enjoy!
