This delicious hot cocoa is perfect for a cold winter’s day. You can make it with any milk you like (whole, skim, almond, or oat milk!) – or our quick 5-minute homemade almond milk with 0mg sodium!
This low sodium hot chocolate is the perfect treat for late night chocolate cravings. Hot chocolate is my go-to drink when I have a sweet tooth but don’t want a full dessert. This sweet drink is made with raw cacao, milk of your choice, and a few naturally sweet ingredients for the perfect drink.
I thought all hot chocolate was low sodium… until I started to read the labels. You’d be amazed at the preservatives and salt that goes into some of those store-bought cocoa mixes. I decided to make one for myself that was low in sodium, but big on rich & chocolatey flavor.

- Milk – you can use any variety you like! The higher the fat content, the creamier the hot chocolate will be. Make sure to check the sodium content of the milk before adding. I used my unsweetened Low Sodium Almond Milk for my version of this recipe.
- Maple Syrup
- Cacao Powder: unsweetened cacao powder is a a tasty and good-for-you addition.
- Vanilla Extract: it’s super important to use real pure vanilla extract, and not artificial baking vanilla flavor.
- Cinnamon: which gives this hot cocoa a great flavor kick! I love to add in a pinch for extra warmth.
