No Salt Canned Beans Versus Homemade

While I love the convenience of no-salt-added canned beans, I also love cooking dry beans from scratch in my pressure cooker – the texture is better and it’s more economical. The Instant Pot works wonders for cooking dried beans fast, no soaking required!

While canned beans are convenient, normal varieties are often high in added salt and sodium.  If you buy canned beans, I always recommend using a no salt added variety so you can control the amount of sodium in your recipes.

Next time you reach for the canned beans, think about investing in a pressure cooker instead! Homemade beans are incredibly cost efficient, and you can add seasonings and spices to the beans while they cook for extra flavor.

What’s In This No Salt Added Black Beans Recipe?

See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!

  • Onions
  • Black Beans – you can use either dried beans (Instant Pot directions below) or canned beans on the stove top.
  • Jalapeno Peppers – for a hint of spice!
  • Diced Tomatoes:  I only use no salt added diced tomatoes, they are really great to stock up on!
  • Lime Juice
  • Chili Powder: for a really nice flavor in this recipe- the chili powder isn’t spicy but will give you a rich and bright flavor.
  • Cumin: also adds a really nice flavor to this recipe – cumin has a lightly smokey flavor found in a lot of soup and chili recipes.
  • No Salt Added Adobo Seasoning: a really fantastic blend of turmeric, pepper, garlic, and spice! I like to get one that doesn’t have added salt it in, so I can control the amount of sodium going into the dish.

How To Make This Recipe

Stove Top Directions with Canned Beans

  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes until the onion begins to soften.
  2. Add the jalapeno peppers and black beans. Stir in the chili powder, paprika, cumin, oregano, and vegetable stock. Mix well to combine. Cover, and bring to a boil. Once boiling, cover and reduce to a simmer.
  3. Cook for 25 minutes, remove the bay leaves, and squeeze in fresh lime juice.
  4. Add to tacos, burrito bowls, or just enjoy by themselves.

Instant Pot Directions with Dried Beans

  1. In the Instant Pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat and set to Sauté mode. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes until the onion begins to soften.
  2. Add the jalapeno peppers and black beans. Stir in the chili powder, paprika, cumin, oregano, and vegetable stock. Mix well to combine. Cover and seal the Instant Pot lid. Set to Pressure Cook (or Manual/High mode, depending on your model), and cook for 40 minutes.
  3. Once 40 minutes has passed, allow the beans to naturally release for 10 more minutes. Then carefully quickly release the remainder of the steam. Remove lid, and squeeze in fresh lime juice.
  4. Add to tacos, burrito bowls, or just enjoy by themselves.
