I love big flavorful salads, and this delicious low sodium version of classic Waldorf salad has it! Great for holidays (all year long!), this crowd-pleaser salad is made with fruits, vegetables, nuts, and an irresistibly creamy dressing.

Waldorf salad was originally invented by New York’s Waldorf Astoria hotel, and soon popularized afterwards! The original dressing consists of regular mayonnaise and salt, so I adapted this version to be a bit lighter, lower in sodium, but still has that creamy delicious flavor.

This would be a fantastic recipe to make for company on Thanksgiving or Christmas, as it’s a great make-ahead salad that everyone will love.

The fruits in this recipe are apples and grapes. I used both a red and green apple (mostly for color) but you could use just one variety if you prefer.

This recipe also has chopped celery, fresh parsley, walnuts, and fresh lettuce for serving. These vegetables bring great flavor, color, and crunch to this salad!

The dressing takes just minutes to make, and is made with Greek yogurt, a little low sodium mayonnaise, honey for sweetness, lemon, and black pepper. It’s simple to whisk together.

Additions and Substitutions

You can use any variety of apples, or any variety of grapes in this recipe.

If you don’t have honey, you can use maple syrup or agave nectar in the dressing instead. Or add 1 tsp of brown sugar.

If you don’t have a low sodium mayonnaise, you can use more Greek yogurt or sour cream instead.

Recipe FAQs

What are the ingredients in a Waldorf salad

A Waldorf salad is made with apples, walnuts, grapes, celery, and fresh parsley. The classic dressing is made with mayonnaise, but this version is lighter with Greek yogurt and honey.

How to store this salad

This recipe stores well, since it’s made with crunchy ingredients (and won’t wilt). Store in an airtight container, and refrigerate for up to 3 days.

Expert Tips

  • To make this recipe ahead of time, you can chop the vegetables and remove the grapes from the vine. You can also prep the dressing 1 day before making the rest of the salad. Chop the apples and parsley right before serving to keep their texture crisp.
  • For a sweeter salad, drizzle a little extra honey right before serving.
  • If you are using large grapes, you can halve them (I didn’t as mine were small). You want the apples and grapes to be bite-sized and consistent throughout the salad.
