I had a craving for a good low sodium Salisbury steak recently, and really wanted to make my own low so verison at home! While not a traditional cut of steak, Salisbury steaks are actually seasoned ground beef patties cooked in a pan and served with mushroom gravy.
This is a fantastic weeknight dinner idea: it’s quick to cook, fairly inexpensive, and great to make in one pan or skillet! I like to serve this with any kind of potatoes: mashed, low sodium garlic potatoes, or low sodium crispy smashed potatoes.

Ingredients You’ll Need
See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!
The base of this recipe is ground beef. I buy the leanest meat I can find (usually 93% or 95%) and I make sure there is no added salt or preservatives – just the beef!
The beef ‘steak’ patties are made with low sodium breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, low sodium Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, and garlic powder.
And the gravy is made from onions, mushrooms, butter, flour, low sodium beef broth, and fresh herbs like parsley.
Additions and Substitutions
Instead of ground beef, try making this recipe with ground turkey.
You can try different spices in the beef patties for different flavors: try a salt-free steak spice, curry powder, or a French herbs de Provence blend for different flavors.
You can use unsalted chicken broth, vegetable broth, or even mushroom broth for the gravy.
How To Make This Recipe

Step 1: Add all the Salisbury steak ingredients to a bowl. Mix well to combine.

Step 2: Divide the mixture into 6 equal parts, and form each one into a patty, about 3/4 inch thick. Place the formed steaks on a plate and set aside.

Step 3: In a large cast iron skillet, add the olive oil over medium-high heat. Place the steaks in the pan and sear for 1-2 minutes on each side until lightly browned. Once browned, remove them from the pan and set aside.

Step 4: In the pan, add the onions and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Heat over medium heat for 6-7 minutes until the onions are lightly browned.

Step 5: Add in the sliced mushrooms and cook for 4-5 minutes until the mushrooms begin to soften.

Step 6: Add the butter and flour into the pan, and cook for about 30 seconds.

Step 7: Add in the beef broth and stir well over low heat, until the gravy thickens and begins to bubble.Add the steaks back into the pan with the gravy and cook for 6-8 minutes until cooked through.

Step 8: Add fresh parsley to garnish, and serve hot.
Recipe FAQs
Each of these low sodium steaks has just 149mg sodium per serving. This includes both the patties and about 1/2 cup of mushrooms and gravy.
Look for ‘plain’ or ‘unseasoned’ breadcrumbs that have no added salt or spices. Panko breadcrumbs are usually a good low sodium option, as I’ve found both regular and whole wheat panko versions with 50-80mg sodium per serving. Or make your own with low sodium bread!
Store any leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
