It’s officially summer, and we have had some hot weather these last few weeks – a perfect occasion to make our favorite low sodium tomato sandwiches! This is a great family favorite which was first made for us by my brother-in-law Russ, who is the ultimate sandwich maker. I adapted this recipe from him, and made a delicious low so version we enjoyed at home.

Start by toasting bread (see below for our favorite low sodium breads), adding some mayo, sliced tomato, and crumbled low sodium cheese with black pepper and Worcestershire sauce. It has a LOT of flavor, and just ~125 mg of sodium per sandwich.

Why This Recipe Works

  • A simple and fresh summertime lunch or dinner.
  • Easy, delicious, and ready in just 10 minutes.
  • A great no-cook meal idea, perfect for hot weather!
  • Anyone can successfully make this dish following our step-by-step photos and instructions below.

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients for low sodium sandwiches - like no salt bread, low sodium cheese, mayo, and low sodium worcestershier sauce.

Start with low sodium bread. I used a no-salt-added bread from Stop & Shop grocery store, which is around me in New England. There are also some low sodium bread options from Ezekiel, and Dave’s Killer Bread which you can find in some stores. You could also follow our low sodium bread recipe at home!

Fresh sliced tomatoes, which are best in summer. Go for sweet, juicy, vine-ripe tomatoes. Homegrown if you have them 🙂

I used some low salt cheese (a queso blanco from Tropical), it’s a very mild white cheese that adds a bit of flavor to the tomato sandwich.

I also add little spread of low sodium mayo, some reduced sodium Worcestershire sauce, and some black pepper.

See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!

Additions and Substitutions

You can use a different kind of cheese – fresh mozzarella packed in water would be a great alternative to the queso blanco. You could also use a salt-free cottage cheese, farmer’s cheese, or even ricotta for a bit of added creaminess.

You can add sliced avocado (we love it with some fresh sliced avocado) or thinly sliced onions for a bit of spice.

Use any low sodium bread you prefer, that fits in with your dietary needs.
