We love making tacos at home, especially with a quick and easy seasoning blend made with pantry staple spices. And you can use the filling in so many ways – in tacos like these, on top of nachos, or in quesadillas with a low sodium Swiss cheese or fresh mozzarella blend.

This recipe is versatile as you can use your favorite filling: ground turkey (which I used), lean ground beef, ground chicken, or even a plant-based option. Serve up your favorite toppings and enjoy!

This recipe is great for entertaining too – if you are making dinner for a crowd, it’s great to cook up a batch of taco filling for the group. Put out a variety of toppings and everyone can customize their own tacos!

Ingredients For Low Sodium Taco Filling

See the recipe card below for a full list of instructions and ingredient amounts!

Ground Meat

I used ground turkey, which is low in saturated fat and is DASH-diet friendly. You could also use lean ground beef, chicken, or another plant-based sodium. The ground turkey I used naturally has 70 mg sodium per serving.

Spices

I used salt-free spices for this recipe: chili powder, cumin, oregano, onion powder, and garlic powder. I also added cayenne pepper or chili flakes for extra heat, but you can omit if you don’t like your taco filling too spicy.

Tortillas

For tacos, I like using corn tortillas as many brands are low in sodium. Trader Joe’s has 0mg sedum hard taco shells, and lots of soft corn shells have under 20mg of sodium.

Taco Toppings

Growing up we used to have lettuce, shredded cheese, and tomatoes on our tacos- but nowadays I like to get a bit more adventurous! Some great low sodium toppings I like are my no-salt pickled onions, sour cream, cilantro, green onions, caramelized onions, or even shredded cabbage.

If you like a little spice, my low sodium pickled carrots taste just like your local taco shop (but without the salt).

How To Make No-Salt-Added Tacos

  1. In a bowl, mix together the spice ingredients: chili powder, cumin, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and red pepper flakes.
  2. Stir well with a spoon until all spices are mixed into an even blend.
  3. In a cast iron skillet, or large pan, add the ground turkey meat and cook over medium heat. Break up the meat, and stir frequently with a spoon until meat has browned (about 8-10 minutes) and there is no more meat.
  4. Add 2 tablespoons of the taco seasoning, and squeeze fresh lime juice over the taco meat. Stir well and cook for an additional minute.
  5. Assemble your tacos: to your corn tortillas, add a scoop of the taco meat, and your favorite toppings (I used sour cream, tomato, lettuce, green onion, cilantro, and pickled onions).
  6. Store leftover taco meat in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
Can you eat tacos on a low sodium diet?

Absolutely, with some simple low sodium swaps like using no-salt-added corn tortillas and our low sodium spice blend. Make sure any toppings you use are low in sodium as well.

How to season ground beef without salt?

For ground meat tacos, we like to use a blend of spices: chili powder, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, and fresh lime juice to add great flavor without adding salt.
