Protein powders can be a great way to add some nutrients into your meals, like my favorite green smoothie, any time of day. But many of them contain high amounts of sodium which aren’t suitable for everyone. Especially those of us who are (or care for someone) following a low-sodium diet.

Personally, I’m training for a half marathon at the moment, so upping my protein intake as I build muscle mass is top of mind. Whatever the reason, adding protein supplements like these powders can be a great option for your health.

the best low sodium protein powders vegan whey proteins and plant based varieties

I’ve outlined some delicious protein powders below, and a few other protein options that can be added into recipes. I mainly focused on plant-based protein powders, as those are my personal favorites to cook with, bake with, and add into smoothies!  But I added some whey options below too that are low in sodium.

You may be able to find some of these low sodium protein powders in stores, but I included links to purchase them online for ease.

Anthony’s Almond Protein

I’m starting with Anthony’s almond protein powder, as it has 10 mg of sodium per serving, and is a plain unsweetened almond protein. It also has just one ingredient (almond protein!) making it a good option for clean eating. I like that it has no added sugars too.

This has been my favorite protein lately – I’ve been adding 2 tablespoons to my fruit smoothies in the morning after a workout or just for breakfast. It thickens the smoothies, and isn’t chalky, and has no taste (good or bad), it’s a very neutral powder.

I actually prefer unsweetened protein powders, as I don’t like the artificial sweeteners and weird taste that a lot of powders can have. If you wanted to add a flavoring, you could always add a teaspoon of cocoa powder or vanilla extract for a flavored smoothie or shake!

Flavor: Plain/unsweetened
Serving Size: 2 tablespoons
Protein per serving: 7g
Sodium per serving: 10mg

Healthier Comfort’s Pea Protein

Another great unsweetened option – pea protein powder! I’ve used this in smoothies and it blends up great.

Like the almond protein above, what I like about this powder is that there is just one thing in it (organic pea protein) and no artificial ingredients. Pea protein doesn’t have much of a flavor, so it won’t overpower fruit smoothies. Plus it’s organic, making it a healthier choice.

Flavor: Plain/unsweetened
Serving Size: 2 tablespoons
Protein per serving: 11g
Sodium per serving: 14mg

Vega Protein Made Simple, Vanilla

If I’m in the mood for a flavored protein powder, Vega brand is my favorite! While a bit higher in sodium than the plain varieties (at 170 mg sodium per serving) the flavor is great. It’s one of my favorite plant-based proteins and also suitable for a vegan diet. It’s also safe for those with a lactose intolerance.

I like adding blending this with a frozen banana and some flaxseeds for a tasty morning shake. And it’s also great to stir into oatmeal too!

With only 4 ingredients, it makes a great option for a quick shake or smoothie without added chemicals.

Flavor: Vanilla
Serving Size: 2 scoops (26g)
Protein per serving: 15g
Sodium per serving: 170mg

365 Chocolate Whey Protein

This chocolate whey protein from Whole Foods 365 brand is a great option if you are looking for a dairy-based protein powder. It has minimal ingredients, and 25g of protein per serving, making it a great option for a shake or smoothie!

And one of the highest protein content amounts on the list. Whey contains essential amino acids and I like that this product lists the content on the back of the packaging.

Flavor: Chocolate
Serving Size: 1 scoop (32g)
Protein per serving: 25g
Sodium per serving: 130mg

PBFit Peanut Butter Protein Powder

This peanut butter protein powder is the perfect option for nut lovers! It’s made with just 3 natural ingredients: peanut flour, coconut sugar, and salt (which adds a low amount of sodium) but still comes in at 95mg sodium per serving.

This would be delicious blended up with a frozen banana, or even some cocoa powder for a tasty dessert. One of the best low sodium protein powder options, made with a minimal ingredient list, and so versatile!

Flavor: Peanut Butter
Serving Size: 2 tablespoons
Protein per serving: 8g
Sodium per serving: 95mg

Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts

While these tasty hemp hearts have a slightly grittier texture than powder, hemp hearts are a fantastic way to add protein to smoothies and oatmeal! Just one ingredient and no weird artificial flavors.

In addition to adding a scoop into a morning shake, I love adding a tablespoon on my favorite low sodium snack: rice cakes and peanut butter with bananas! They give a light, slightly nutty taste.

And hemp hearts are the secret ingredient in my low sodium Caesar salad, I add them for texture instead of parmesan cheese.

Flavor: Plain/Unsweetened
Serving Size: 3 tablespoons
Protein per serving: 10g
Sodium per serving: 0mg

Double Chocolate Whey Protein

Chocolate lovers rejoice, this tasty chocolate whey protein powder has a whopping 24 grams of protein per serving with just 130 milligrams of sodium.

In addition to shakes and smoothies, you can use whey protein concentrate powder to make plant-based ice cream in the blender, and even add some into baked goods like brownies or chocolate cookies!

Mix half a scoop with some peanut protein for a delicious chocolate peanut butter smoothie!

Flavor: Double Chocolate
Serving Size: 1 scoop (30g)
Protein per serving: 24g
Sodium per serving: 130mg

Vega Strawberry Banana Protein Powder

If you want to add a little extra fruit flavor to your smoothies, this great Vega strawberry banana protein is a fantastic choice. While Vega makes many different protein and hydration products, this strawberry banana is one of the lowest in sodium they have. It also has a great taste, and works for plant-based diets!

Flavor: Strawberry Banana
Serving Size: 2 scoops (26g)
Protein per serving: 15g
Sodium per serving: 170mg

Vanilla Sport Plant-Based Protein

This fantastic (and organic) vanilla protein powder has one of the lowest sodium content options of the flavored proteins I listed. And comes in both chocolate and vanilla.

What I like about the nutrition facts label on this product is that is lists both the sodium/protein amounts for one and two scoops. Making it easy to decide how much you’d like to add for your sodium limit for that meal! This great vegan protein powder without much sodium or animal protein.

Flavor: Vanilla or Chocolate
Serving Size: 1 scoop (21g)
Protein per serving: 15g for one scoop, 30g for 2 scoops
Sodium per serving: 80mg for one scoop, 160mg for 2 scoops

Wellius Chocolate and Vanilla Proteins

I found Wellius brand’s protein powders after doing some research online, and the nutritional information is 0mg per serving! I haven’t tried either of these different flavors yet, but wanted to share as they could be a great options. Add a scoop without affecting your daily sodium intake!

And, like many of the powders listed here, have very minimal ingredients, and no sugar alcohols, making them a great choice.

Flavor: Vanilla or Chocolate
Serving Size: 1 scoop (34g)
Protein per serving: 15g
Sodium per serving: 0mg

Plain/Unsweetened Quinoa & Chia Seed Protein

I wanted to end this list with another great vegan protein option that comes in a vanilla flavor! This great blend is made from sprouted grains like brown rice, quinoa, and chia seeds (ever owned a chia pet?) with no added sugars.

Flavor: Vanilla
Serving Size: 1 scoop (25g)
Protein per serving: 18g
Sodium per serving: 140mg
